How your company becomes visible in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews

900 million weekly active users ask ChatGPT. 25 percent of all Google searches show an AI Overview. 58 percent lower click-through rate at position 1 for queries with an AI Overview compared with queries without (Ahrefs, February 2026). But cited brands reach 35 percent higher click-through rates than brands that are not cited (Seer Interactive, November 2025). This guide shows you, with 16 sourced references, the Princeton GEO study (ACM KDD 2024, DOI 10.1145/3637528.3671900) and current market data from German-speaking Europe, how to build that visibility systematically.

Chapter 01

AEO, GEO, LLMO: what the terms mean and where they differ

Three abbreviations, one goal: being cited as a source inside the answers of AI systems. The terms sound similar but mean different things. If you discuss the topic with agencies or internal teams, it helps to keep them apart.

AEO, Answer Engine Optimization, describes the practice of preparing content so that AI-driven answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews draw on it as a source. AEO is the operational term marketing leads use day to day. The focus is one question: how do I get my company cited when a potential customer asks an AI something?

GEO, Generative Engine Optimization, is the academic term, coined in 2023 by a research team from Princeton University and IIT Delhi. The study was published in 2024 at the ACM KDD conference in Barcelona (DOI 10.1145/3637528.3671900) and is the first peer reviewed research on the subject. GEO describes the systematic optimisation of content for generative search engines, including measurable methods such as Quotation Addition at plus 41 percent, Statistics Addition at plus 31 percent and Cite Sources at plus 27 percent, rising to plus 115 percent for pages ranked fifth among the retrieved sources.

LLMO, Large Language Model Optimization, is a synonym for GEO used in some agency circles but absent from the academic literature. When someone says LLMO, they usually mean GEO.

In short: AEO is the practice. GEO is the science behind it. This guide uses both terms because most search queries mix them.

Chapter 02

41 percent of companies use AI, 51 percent struggle with digitalisation

You are not alone in this. The German digital association Bitkom published two studies in 2026 that together sharpen the picture. The representative survey Digitalisation of the Economy 2026 (604 companies with 20 or more employees interviewed by telephone, calendar weeks 2 to 6 of 2026, published on 11 March 2026) shows that 41 percent now use AI against 17 percent the year before, with a further 48 percent planning or discussing adoption. At the same time 51 percent struggle to cope with digitalisation. The second study, Marketing in Digital Transition 2026 (180 companies from the digital sector within the Bitkom network, calendar weeks 44 to 50 of 2025, published on 12 February 2026 and marked by Bitkom as not representative), has 84 percent naming AI as the most influential trend through the end of 2027. As internal obstacles, 35 percent name a missing AI strategy and 34 percent poor integration.

The gap is real, but it is not permanent. Companies that build an AEO strategy now occupy positions in AI answers that will be hard to win later. Brands cited today settle in as the default answer. Brands that wait will be competing against an order that has already formed.

Chapter 04

What the first peer reviewed study on AI visibility found

Until 2024 there was no scientific basis for the question of how to optimise content for generative search engines. The recommendations came from agency blogs, SEO social media and the anecdotal reports of individual vendors. That changed in August 2024 at the ACM KDD conference in Barcelona.

A research team of six scientists (Pranjal Aggarwal, Vishvak Murahari, Tanmay Rajpurohit, Ashwin Kalyan, Karthik Narasimhan and Ameet Deshpande) from Princeton University and IIT Delhi published the study "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" (DOI 10.1145/3637528.3671900, pages 5 to 16 of the conference proceedings). They tested 9 different optimisation methods across 10,000 search queries on several generative search engines.

The results overturn several assumptions the SEO industry has treated as settled for years. The strongest single method is Quotation Addition, the inclusion of quotes from credible sources, at plus 41 percent. Statistics Addition, meaning the inclusion of concrete, verifiable figures, delivers plus 31 percent, and Cite Sources on its own plus 27 percent. The metric is Position-Adjusted Word Count, the share of words in the AI answer weighted by position.

Cite Sources is a special case. When all competing sources are optimised at the same time, the method lifts pages at rank 5 of the retrieved sources by 115 percent, while reducing the visibility of the top-ranked source by 30 percent. So you do not need a top 3 ranking to appear in AI answers. And whoever already ranks first does not automatically win here.

The most surprising finding: keyword stuffing hurts. The method that has underpinned many SEO strategies for two decades produces a decline of 8 percent against the baseline in generative search engines. In the check against the live system Perplexity the drop was slightly larger at 10 percent. That is not a marginal effect. It is a change of paradigm.

Which content ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews cite, and which they do not

Every AI platform selects sources by its own criteria. What works in ChatGPT does not automatically work the same way in Perplexity. Here are the platform-specific patterns, based on the most recent studies available.

ChatGPT delivers 87.4 percent of AI referral traffic (Conductor, 13 November 2025, analysis of 3.3 billion sessions and 13,770 domains from its own enterprise client base). ChatGPT favours content with concrete statistics, structured data and clear source attribution. In the Ahrefs correlation analysis across 75,000 brands (August 2025), brand web mentions correlate at 0.664 with visibility in AI Overviews, backlinks at only 0.218. Ahrefs stresses that no causation follows from this and that all values are moderate to very weak relationships on the Spearman scale. The direction is nonetheless clear: being mentioned counts for more than being linked.

Perplexity links every answer directly to its sources. Perplexity favours current content with clear authorship and verifiable facts. In German-speaking Europe, Perplexity is still smaller than ChatGPT but growing quickly.

Google AI Overviews appear in 25.11 percent of all searches (Conductor, The 2026 AEO/GEO Benchmarks Report, 21.9 million analysed queries). In healthcare the figure is 48.7 percent. Context from the same source: AI referral traffic so far accounts for an average of 1.08 percent of total website traffic and grows by around one percent per month. Visibility is therefore shifting considerably faster than measurable traffic. Building citations today means positioning for a channel that is still growing.

AirOps published a complementary study in April 2026: comparison pages with three tables receive 25.7 percent more AI citations, validation pages with eight list sections up to 26.9 percent more, and shortlist pages averaging ten words or fewer per sentence 18.8 percent more. The figures apply per page type and exclusively to ChatGPT; they do not transfer to other platforms.

7 methods that measurably improve your AI visibility

Ordered by measured impact. Every method is backed by Princeton GEO (Aggarwal et al. 2024) or by verified industry studies. Not a generic "improve your content", but concrete implementation with a measurable result.

Add statistics and verifiable figures

Princeton GEO shows plus 31 percent visibility through Statistics Addition. Every figure needs a source, a year and a method. Example: "900 million weekly active users (OpenAI, February 2026)" instead of "millions of users". AI systems recognise vague numbers and rate them as less worth citing.

Cite and link your sources

Cite Sources delivers plus 27 percent on its own, an average of plus 31 percent in combination with other methods, and up to plus 115 percent for pages at rank 5 of the retrieved sources. Back every claim with a primary source, meaning a DOI, a URL or a study name. Peer reviewed sources carry more weight than agency blogs. Sources from German-speaking Europe such as Bitkom, ZEW and Destatis are particularly valuable because competitors rarely use them.

Integrate expert quotes and studies

Quotation Addition is the strongest single method at plus 41 percent (Princeton). Name the researchers, authors and institutions with concrete context. Example: "The behavioural economists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky documented in Prospect Theory in 1979 (Econometrica, Vol 47 No 2, DOI 10.2307/1914185) that losses weigh more heavily in psychological terms than equivalent gains."

Create entity clarity

In the Ahrefs analysis across 75,000 brands, brand mentions correlate at 0.664 with AI citations, backlinks at only 0.218. Ahrefs itself points out that no causation follows and that the relationships are moderate to weak on the Spearman scale. The direction is nonetheless clear: off-site signals beat on-site signals. Mark up Schema.org Organization, Person and Service consistently, and build mentions beyond your own domain.

Structured data and schema markup

Article, TechArticle, FAQ, Speakable and Service schema signal the structure and citation-worthiness of your content to AI crawlers. ScholarlyArticle with a DOI identifier in the citation property is the strongest schema lever. Avoid generic schemas; use correct authors, dates and identifiers. Note that Google retired FAQ rich results on 7 May 2026, so FAQ markup no longer produces a search appearance, although Google states it continues to use the data to understand pages.

Keep content current

SE Ranking (December 2025, 2,328,533 pages analysed): pages updated within the past two months reach 5.0 citations, pages unchanged for more than two years reach 3.9. The values are log-transformed and are not absolute counts.

Do not lock out AI crawlers

Deliberately allow GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and GoogleOther in robots.txt. The SIGIR study across 11,500 user queries shows that websites blocking Google AI crawlers are retrieved noticeably less often by AI Overviews, even where access would be technically possible. On llms.txt the evidence points clearly the other way: Google states it does not use the file, Ahrefs found that among 137,210 domains with a valid llms.txt, 97 percent received not a single request for it in May 2026, and SE Ranking measured no relationship with citation frequency across roughly 300,000 domains. The file does no harm, but it is not a lever.

Chapter 07

The invisible loss: what companies without an AEO strategy are already losing

Here is what makes it difficult: the loss caused by missing AI visibility never appears on an invoice. No debit, no red entry in the accounting system. Only the creeping sense that enquiries are thinning out and that competitors somehow seem to be everywhere. Behavioural economics calls this loss aversion, documented by Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky in Prospect Theory in 1979 (Econometrica, Vol 47 No 2, DOI 10.2307/1914185), for which Kahneman received the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in 2002. Losses only feel like losses when they arrive as a bill. Silent losses hurt less in psychological terms and are therefore tolerated for longer, even though they cost exactly the same.

The Seer Interactive data shows the effect concretely: brands cited in Google AI Overviews reach an organic click-through rate of 0.70 percent against 0.52 percent for brands not cited on the same queries, roughly 35 percent more. For paid ads the difference is 7.89 against 4.14 percent. Seer itself qualifies this by noting that no causation can be derived: it is equally possible that brands with stronger authority and higher baselines are simply cited more often. Read the other way round it still holds: whoever is not cited carries the full decline.

Who this offer is not for

Not for companies that only want quick rankings. Paid search exists for that. AEO builds positions that hold, but there is no guarantee of visibility. In a Semrush measurement across 81 newly published pages, a large share was still cited by no platform after 30 days.

Not for very small companies under 10 employees with a tightly limited content budget. GEO needs real content with real data. If you have no content worth citing, even the best schema architecture will not help. In that case, invest first in your website foundation and then in AEO.

Not for companies unwilling to fill their content with real data, sources and expertise. AI recognises generic content and rates it as less worth citing. The Princeton study shows it plainly: keyword stuffing hurts, statistics and sources help.

Frequently asked questions on AEO and AI visibility

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO optimises content for classic search engine rankings on Google and Bing. AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization, optimises for your company being cited as a source directly inside the answers of ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews. The 2024 Princeton GEO study (DOI 10.1145/3637528.3671900) shows that the optimisation strategies differ fundamentally: Quotation Addition raises visibility by 41 percent and Statistics Addition by 31 percent, while Keyword Stuffing sits 8 percent below the baseline.

Do I need AEO if I am already doing SEO?

Yes. According to Conductor (13 November 2025), AI Overviews appear in 25.11 percent of all Google searches, and Ahrefs measures a 58 percent lower click-through rate at position 1 for queries with an AI Overview than for queries without (4 February 2026, 300,000 keywords). That is a comparison of two groups, not a demonstrated cause and effect. SEO remains important, but without AEO you lose the growing share of users who search and decide through AI systems.

How long does it take before my company is cited in ChatGPT?

That depends on three factors: existing domain authority, the volume and quality of structured content, and the frequency of brand mentions. According to SE Ranking (December 2025), domain traffic is the strongest predictor of citations in Google AI Mode (SHAP 0.63). On speed there is one measurement: Semrush tracked 81 newly published pages over 30 days. Google AI Mode cited 36 percent as early as the following day, ChatGPT reached 42 percent after 30 days. A large share of the pages was never cited at all. The real question is therefore not how long it takes, but whether a page enters the retrieval pool in the first place. Small sample, two platforms, content owned by the vendor running the study.

What does an AI citation audit cost?

Does AEO also work for local businesses?

Yes, and for local businesses AEO is particularly effective. Google AI Overviews appear especially often on local search intent. A complete Google Business Profile with current data, reviews and structured information is preferred by AI systems as a source. Reliable comparative figures on how AEO affects local visibility barely exist so far, neither from us nor from research. Anyone quoting you a percentage here has, as a rule, not measured it.

Which AI platforms matter for the German-speaking market?

ChatGPT delivers 87.4 percent of AI referral traffic (Conductor, 13 November 2025). On market share, everything depends on the method of measurement: Sensor Tower put ChatGPT at 46.4 percent at the end of May 2026, Similarweb at around 54 percent, and StatCounter at just under 77 percent in June 2026. What all measurements share is a continuing decline from a peak of around 87 percent in early 2025. Google AI Overviews appear in 25.11 percent of all searches. Claude by Anthropic and Microsoft Copilot are gaining share in the B2B segment.

Can I do AEO myself?

Basic measures such as schema markup, FAQ structures and answer-first formats can be implemented in-house if you have the technical knowledge. The strategic layer, meaning citation monitoring, source architecture following the Princeton methodology and entity building across platforms, requires specialised tools and experience that only pay off above a certain volume.

How do I measure whether AEO is working?

Classic SEO metrics such as ranking position and click-through rate are not sufficient for AEO. The relevant KPIs are citation rate, meaning how often your company is named in AI answers, citation recall, meaning across how many relevant queries you are cited, AI referral traffic, meaning measurable traffic from ChatGPT and Perplexity in Google Analytics, and impression score, meaning how prominently you appear in AI answers. We measure this quarterly using specialised monitoring tools.

The zero-click rate of 58.5 percent in the US comes from SparkToro, not from Semrush.

Between January and April 2026, 68.01 percent of Google searches ended without a click, against 60.45 percent in 2024. The widely quoted 58.5 percent for the US and 59.7 percent for the EU come from the older 2024 SparkToro study with Datos. SparkToro itself notes that the studies are not directly comparable because the data partners changed.

Block 3: industry reports and studies from German-speaking Europe

  • Bitkom (2026): Marketing in Digital Transition 2026, presented on 12 February 2026. Online survey of 180 companies from the digital sector within the Bitkom network, calendar weeks 44 to 50 of 2025, described by Bitkom as not representative. 84% see AI as the most influential trend through the end of 2027. Marketing objectives: new customer acquisition 91%, customer retention 89%, building trust 87%.
  • Bitkom (2026): Digitalisation of the Economy 2026, published on 11 March 2026. Representative telephone survey of 604 companies with 20 or more employees, calendar weeks 2 to 6 of 2026. 41% use AI, up from 17% the previous year, with a further 48% planning or discussing adoption. 51% struggle with digitalisation.
  • Forrester (January 2026): "The State Of Business Buying, 2026", published on 21 January 2026. Buyers Journey Survey covering close to 18,000 B2B buyers worldwide. 94 percent use AI in the buying process, up from 89 percent the year before. Generative AI and conversational search are named as the most meaningful source of information more often than vendor websites, product experts or sales.
  • Gartner (February 2024): Forecast that traditional search engine volume would fall by 25 percent by 2026. Alan Antin, Vice President Analyst. The deadline has since passed and a decline of that magnitude has not occurred. The forecast is still widely quoted, sometimes with the wrong target year.
  • SE Ranking (15 December 2025): "How to optimize for AI Mode", 2,328,533 pages from 295,485 domains, XGBoost with SHAP analysis over more than 500,000 prompts. Domain traffic is the strongest predictor for Google AI Mode (SHAP 0.63), while referring domains dominate for ChatGPT (1.21). Updated within two months: 5.0 against 3.9 citations. The citation values are log-transformed.
  • AirOps (1 April 2026): "From Retrieved to Cited", 217,508 retrieved pages from 7,500 commercial prompts, ChatGPT only. Comparison pages with three tables +25.7%, validation pages with eight list sections up to +26.9%, shortlist pages averaging ten words or fewer per sentence +18.8%. The figures apply per page type, not in general.
  • Seer Interactive (4 November 2025): "AIO Impact on Google CTR: September 2025 Update", named after the end of the collection period. 3,119 search terms across 42 organisations, June 2024 to September 2025, 25.1 million organic and 1.1 million paid impressions. Cited brands: organic click-through rate 0.70 against 0.52 percent, paid 7.89 against 4.14 percent. Seer notes that causation cannot be demonstrated. A larger follow-up study from April 2026 covering 53 brands indicates that click-through rates have been recovering since early 2026. Note that this is a marketing agency analysing its own client accounts, not a market-wide sample.
  • GEO market size: The estimates diverge widely. For 2025, research vendors quote between 420 million and 1.01 billion US dollars, and for 2034 between 5.87 and 33.7 billion at compound growth rates between 32.8 and 50.5 percent. The frequently quoted pairing of 848 million and 33.7 billion is attributed inconsistently and is not backed by an open methodology at any vendor.
